Vice President for Student Affairs

Shelia Higgs Burkhalter

Shelia Higgs Burkhalter, affectionately known as Shiggs, is the VP for Student Affairs, liaison to the Springs Close and Springsteen Foundations (which fund the Close Scholars initiatives), and advisor to the Close Scholars. Shiggs has been the trip advisor/chaperone to the Global Close Scholars for four years. Her responsibilities include co-planning trip logistics, leading pre-immersion experiences, and providing daily blogs recapping the days' activities during the trip. Shiggs has accompanied students to England, France, Costa Rica, and Greece, and is excited to join students on this journey to Peru.

Monte' Curry

Monte' is a sophomore Mass Communication major with a minor in community-based learning. He is deeply engaged in both academic pursuits and community service initiatives. Beyond his studies, Monte' actively contributes to campus life, serving as a bridge between students and the family-oriented campus community. He strives to foster a positive atmosphere where all students feel connected and supported in his collegiate journey.

Aaliyah Haney

Aaliyah is a freshman Special Education major with a minor in Spanish. She is a SC Teaching Fellow, CESHS Student Ambassador, SC CEC Member, and CESHS DEIB Student Advisory Board Member. Aaliyah has a passion for learning about different cultures and enjoys doing cosmetology and spending time with family. She is excited for the opportunities this Peru trip will bring.

Kaitny Stroman

Kaitny is a senior Human Nutrition major from Aiken, SC. This is her third year as a Close Scholar. She has volunteered in various health settings such as hospice care and free clinics. After graduation, Kaitny is obtaining her Master's in Public Health and Social Work. She is very excited for this global experience to Peru as she enjoys traveling, trying new foods, and shopping.

Isabelle Roddy

Isabelle is a social work major from Chapin, South Carolina. She enjoys new experiences, trying new foods, and meeting people from all places and walks of life. She has always had a desire to travel, and is immensely grateful to the Close Scholar program for allowing her this opportunity!

Executive Assistant to the Vice President

Briana Maund

Briana is the Executive Assistant to the VP for Student Affairs at Winthrop. She is a native Bostonian and newer member of the Winthrop community. Briana has visited several countries on immersion trips, but this is her first time traveling with the Close Scholars and first trip to South America!
